Ryan & Joanne
We had absolutely no idea about the birthing process or what hypnobirthing was all about until our sessions with Katie. She explained everything really clearly – using examples and visual aids that we found really useful.
We both learned a lot about the stages of labour and were able to examine our own previous misconceptions about the process and where these may come from. This made us re-think the way we think about giving birth, and instead of seeing it as something that I will just have to get through, we are now looking forward to it as the process of welcoming our baby into the world.
My partner found the sessions very empowering also as he was given many examples of the ways in which his role is important, and how he can have a very clear impact on the wellbeing on myself and our baby on the day. It has definitely increased our feeling of togetherness and we both feel more confident that we will understand any complications or options that may present themselves.
As I have a scientific background I found the knowledgeable way that Katie presented the physiological and psychological basis of birthing to be extremely reassuring. Her background in clinical environments and as a caregiver was clear through the passion and empathy with which she spoke. And she gave us clear information on all available birthing options without showing any bias towards different environments, allowing us to make our own choices.
Whilst some of the more common meditations, visualisations and affirmations are not to my personal liking, once I understood the basis of the practice it was extremely easy to reframe the same sentiments into phrases that I was more comfortable with and Katie provided lots of resources and encouragement for me to find material that catered more to my preferences.
Hypnobirthing is a lot more logical, accessible and research based than I had previously thought and I believe that the knowledge gained through our sessions will be invaluable during the birth of our daughter.
